At 27 years old, Abhishek Raghuram performs to full houses and rave reviews wherever he goes, whether in India, America or London. Heir to a legendary legacy and an impressive lineage of musicians on both sides of his family, the child prodigy, who is already one of the most heard carnatic vocalists in India, is on the fast track to become one of the top Indian classical vocalists of the new generation.
Possessing a rare combination of virtuosity, versatility and style—as shown in his talent and innovation in manodharma (improvisation)—he has, according to critics, created a new genre in vocal music, one that is “food for the intellect, mind, heart and soul”. And as the grandson of late mridangam legend, Palghat Raghu, and with the Lalgudi family name on his mother’s side, music is in his blood, he says.
A disciple of vocal guru P.S. Narayanaswamy, Raghuram started learning the mringdam from his grandfather, winning accolades by the time he reached seven years old. He moved on to vocal performance two years later and his reputation has grown ever since. Today, Abhishek is a rising star in carnatic vocal music who has performed with prominent musicians such as T.K. Murthy, Umayalpuram Sivaraman, N.Ramani, Karaikudi Mani, and Ganesh Kumaresh, amongst others. His awards include Yuva Puraskar from Sangeet Natak Academy, Senior Outstanding Vocalist from the Music Academy, and the Shanmukha Sangeetha Shironmani Award by Shanmukhananda Sangeet Sabha, Mumbai.
The vocalist, who gave up doing his Masters in Computer Science to pursue music, has not regretted his decision to dedicate his life to his art. “I had found my calling,” he says, “the satisfaction of doing something you want is only when you do it. And I substituted megabytes with manodharma”.
