Greek violinist Leonidas Kavakos returns to join the SSO and Lan Shui for Mendelssohn’s well-loved Violin Concerto. Lan Shui pairs this familiar masterpiece with Beethoven’s First Symphony, a work which is more evidently rooted in the world of Mozart and Haydn than the later symphonies, but which nevertheless demonstrates the confidence and radical ideas of a young composer who would go on to single-handedly change the course of musical history.

Leonidas Kavakos has established himself as a violinist and artist of rare quality, known at the highest level for his virtuosity, superb musicianship and the integrity of his playing. International recognition first came while Kavakos was still in his teens, winning the Sibelius Competition in 1985 and, three years later, the Paganini Competition. His Mendelssohn Violin Concerto album on Sony Classical won an ECHO Klassik award for Best Concerto Recording in 2009.
