John Nelson, conductor
Viviane Hagner, violin

Schumann Manfred Overture, op. 115
Sibelius Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47
Brahms Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68

John Nelson returns to take centrestage in this concert featuring two key orchestral masterpieces. Originally composed for an acquaintance from the Helsinki Orchestra, Sibelius’ technically demanding Violin Concerto underwent a major revision before taking the familiar form in which it is known today. “Brahms’ artistic kinship with Beethoven must be plain to every observer,” the critic Eduard Hanslick wrote of Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 – a work which took the composer no less than 15 years to sketch, so conscious was he of Beethoven’s shadow behind him. The work proved so successful that it was referred to by many as “Beethoven’s Tenth”.

“John Nelson steers it all with a sure hand and total conviction” Gramophone
