Gypsy by Arthur Laurents (book), Stephen Sondheim (lyrics) and Jule Styne (music) is one of the most cherished of American musicals. Set in the 1920s, this classic of the American musical theatre is a tribute to the lost but thrilling world of American vaudeville and burlesque, as well as dealing with the loving but sometimes tumultuous relationship between mothers and daughters. In its essence, Gypsy is the American musical that most successfully covers the rise of an ‘ugly duckling’, who eventually becomes one of American burlesques’ most celebrated and famous stars – Miss Gypsy Rose Lee. How Gypsy achieves this, however, is primarily through her resourceful, determined and domineering mother – Rose. Regarded by many as one of the best, if not the best, ‘back-stage’ American musicals, Gypsy introduced such wonderful music standards as – Let Me Entertain You, Everything’s Coming Up Roses, Some People and You Gotta Get a Gimmick.
LASALLE’s production of Gypsy, directed by Tony Knight and choreographed by Tony-nominee, Nikki Snelson, will feature the entire student body from the Musical Theatre programme, as well as students from Technical Theatre. So – come along and see Gypsy – and ‘Let Us Entertain You – and you’ll have a real good time, yes sir, you’ll have a real good time!’.
