In the tradition of Indian classical dance, the relationship between teacher (guru) and disciple (shishya) is one of great piety, similar to that between parent and child. Traditionally sent to live with his or her guru, the shishya learns devotion as the guru imparts his or her life philosophy, knowledge and energy, and shapes the disciple.

In this series, renowned photographer Ganesh Ramachandran presents an excerpt from his long-term documentary project with senior dance gurus in India. The work focuses upon the interpretive exchanges between teacher (guru) and student (shishya) in the everyday space of the dance studio, a critical aspect of classical dance training in India often ignored in contemporary dance photography.

Ganesh Ramachandran is a photographer, architect, and urban designer based in Boston, MA, USA. His foray into dance photography was inspired by his work with photographer Lois Greenfield and his continuous engagement with Navarasa, a Boston-based contemporary dance company. He is a 2011 winner of the Momentum: Images of Dance photography awards and was the official photographer of Massachusetts Dance Festival in 2011.
