A priest who has dedicated his life to decorating the temple with flowers finds himself in a moral dilemma when he falls in love with a courtesan. Violating his dharma (code of behaviour) and bhakti (devotion), he is forced to confront his inner demons as he strays down a path of adultery, lies, and shame. Torn between his duty to his king and his duty to his wife, and between his love for god and his love for his mistress, his entire world crumbles before him as he is left holding the pieces of his transgression.

Based on a Chitradurga folk tale, Flowers is a riveting dramatic monologue about the human condition, told through the intimate confessions of a fallen priest. As he revisits his disgrace in a poignant soliloquy, his love, loyalty and honour are thrown into question.

The first English play by lauded playwright Girish Karnad, Flowers brings together some of the best theatre talents from India in a unique collaboration between Karnad; world renowned New Delhi director, Roysten Abel; national award winning actor, Rajit Kapur; Bangalore theatre, Ranga Shankara; and Bombay’s leading theatre company, Rage.

The production premiered at Bangalore’s prestigious Ranga Shankara Theatre Festival in 2006 and has since been staged across India to packed audiences.
