After invading China, the Qing Dynasty’s capital was set up at Yanjing (known as Beijing today). This is the story that took place in the 6th year of the reign of Qing Emperor, ShunZhi (corresponding to 1649).

The Empress Dowager, XiaoZhuang, was the childhood sweetheart of the late Emperor’s younger brother, Prince Regent DuoErGun, a respected war veteran. She hoped that by marrying DuoErGun, she would also help to protect the throne for Emperor ShunZhi, then a teenager. However, Emperor ShunZhi and his subjects strongly opposed the marriage. XiaoZhuang thus has to maneuver in the power struggles, displaying the inexorable charms and brilliance of a woman politician. However, in the whirlpool of unpredictability and bloody conflicts, DuoErGun had never given her a satisfactory answer.
