When Beethoven wrote his massive Ninth Symphony, he left some pretty big shoes for subsequent composers to fill. As Johannes Brahms famously put it: "You can't have any idea what it's like always to hear the footsteps of a giant marching behind you."

The burden of greatness - of having it thrust upon him, perhaps of having been born with it, but most certainly of having nevertheless to achieve it - demanded both that Brahms write symphonies and that those symphonies express greatness in its most exalted form.

It is safe to say that Brahms is one of those giants too, tramping along at our backs, daring us to ignore him. Join TPO as we celebrate Brahms' four symphonies, in what was for him the greatest and most demanding of genres.

13 Sept: Symphonies 1 & 4
11 Oct: Symphonies 3 & 2
