Esplanade’s da:ns festival brings together two local artists – contemporary dance choreographer Kuik Swee Boon and Indie musician Bani Haykal – in a first-time collaboration to create a new work that contemplates love. Inspired by their personal reflections on love and life, six dancers from T.H.E. Dance Company star in this piece about the ceaseless search for the human need to love and be loved. Bani, who composed the score, performs music and spoken word live on stage. Singapore fashion designer Sunny Lim explores form and movement of fabric in the outfits specially created for the show, complemented by select pieces from his menswear label MILS.

Silences We Are Familiar With connects the physicality of dance with the intangible feelings of love. These connections, forged between individuals, bind us together in humanity. Expect an evening of eloquent choreography set to evocative melodies, articulated by some of Singapore’s most distinctive dancers. Silences We Are Familiar With will speak for the heart, and from the heart.

Kuik Swee Boon is a recipient of the National Arts Council’s Young Artist Award 2007, and former principal dancer of Nacho Duato’s Compania Nacional de Danza in Spain. Kuik’s T.H.E Dance Company has come to be regarded as one of Singapore’s fast-rising and most dynamic contemporary dance groups. Bani experiments with music and text in his original soundscapes, which explores narratives, and music culture in Singapore history. He is also the vocalist and principal songwriter for b-quartet, and the newest member of The Observatory.

Commissioned by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay for da:ns festival 2012
