Originating in the early 17th century, the classical Japanese dance-drama form of Kabuki is known for its highly stylized movements and dramatic gestures, as well as the elaborate make-up and costumes worn by its performers.

While Kabuki is a form of theatre, it is made up of both dance and acting components. These dance elements are incorporated with the aim of making the most effect with little movement. Through these dances, Kabuki artists instill a sense of beauty in their movement.

Come join Kubota Takeshi as he takes audiences on a journey through the multi-faceted world of Kabuki. He will be performing Su-Odori, often used for dance recitals where the usual stage production is omitted. The performer wears a formal kimono, but no makeup or wig and uses a folded fan as a hand prop.

The programme will feature a collection of Su-Odori dances drawn from some of the most famous Kabuki plays.
