In a collection that displays oil and acrylic works that are steeped in traditional foundation, yet exuding personal mastery of the Western medium, Nanyang Treasures: A Showcase of Talents across Three Generations puts together an impressive selection of artworks created by senior artists from the first to third generation.
Having been trained in Chinese ink from a young age, these artists have created new traits of painting, with textural strokes in abstract expressionism or bursts of warmth in a bustling local scene. Inspired by the current art scene in today’s day and age, the paintings are filled with hints of Western art elements that also serve as reminders of tradition that complement today’s modern environment.
These artists are constantly evolving and rediscovering their art, and these virtuous watercolourists beautifully render natural scenes in crisp and refined colours, transporting gallery visitors from fantastical landscapes and inspiring terrains to more familiar sights like nostalgic shophouses and the immense skyscrapers of Singapore’s business district.
