What does modern romance entail these days?
Titled The Two Of Them, this mixed media showcase by Singaporean visual artist Liana Yang presents experimental works and ideas fomented during her residency as part of DECK's inaugural Artist-in-Residence (A.i.R.) programme. Examining the subtleties, nuances, contradictions and pitfalls of modern romantic relationships, the works seamlessly switch lenses between the personal and the sociological, while pushing the boundaries of image creation and presentation.
Occupying the Gallery 1 (Level 1), Gallery 2 (Level 2) and the exterior of DECK will be three new bodies of work – Forever Is A Long Time (2014), Year 0 (2015) and Drinking Lovers’ Spit (2013). The installation, With Someone Like You, which the artist created specially for the recent Singapore Night Festival, will also enjoy an extended run at DECK’s Artist Studio (Level 3).
Linking all three works is a desire, driven by personal experiences and memories, to unravel the enigmas of contemporary romantic relationships and the human conditions upon which these connections are founded on. It also encourages a discourse on the unconventional wisdoms that arise from what people have come to call ‘love’.
Join the artist for a tour and talk on 24 October (Saturday) 3pm, to gain more insights on her thought processes and approaches.
